Mamasita

In an increasingly more educated culture, inspired by foreign travel and the experience of fast and fresh international staple foods, Mamasita is the forward thinking answer to the emerging popularity and awareness of authentic Mexican food and beverage. Currently, the perception of Mexican cuisine is shifting rapidly in Australia. Lovers of a real Mexican taco or tostada are no longer satisfied with the typical Americanized offerings that dominate the Australian dining scene, and crave the flavours they experienced on their last visit to Mexico or the USA. With that fact in mind, coupled with the ever-growing interest in the fascinating world of quality tequila, Mamasita offers  only the best aspects of an authentic taqueria, while showcasing the enormous variety of tequila on the market. Mamasita presents its food in a professional, creative and eco-friendly fashion, all the while remaining true to traditional cooking methods and flavours.

“It’s only been open for 12 days but if they can keep this up, Mamasita cannot fail”.

EatDrink threethousand 18th, Feb 2010

From what I’ve heard, whenever food-loving Melburnians visit New York they come back with a passion for opening a Mexican Restaurant. After a while life takes hold, they go eat some Pho and forget all about it. Nay, we are left to fend for ourselves with the old el paso burrito kit and a heavy handed approach to sour cream. Well my friends, you can put down that seasoning sachet because finally aNew York educated Aussie has delivered on the collective dream with Matt Lane opening Mamasita in Melbourne this week.

Mamasita - Spanish slang for ‘hot babe’- is a classy joint, (no cucarachas in their kitchen!) the food is tasty yet delicate, so very far from the misrepresented Mexican food most of us are used to. My favourite dish - possibly a new favourite for life - was the Elotes Callejeros, aMexican corn on the cob with chipotle mayo, cheese and fresh lime ¡ay caramba! In fact, everything on the menu is muchos tasty, not to mention entirely gluten free. SoPapasotes out there, take your Mamasitas down to Collins street to get yourself an education on tequilas, clear your sinuses with a spicy, spicy beer and wash it all down with a grapefruit margarita. ¡Ole!
